Wellness Wednesday: The Campus is Glowing for Mental Health

More than four years since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic we are still facing the impacts of stifled social interactions according to the National Library of Medicine, including reconnecting with others in our community. While college is only a short phase in your life, perhaps instead of treating it like a stranger you can shift your mindset and welcome it with open arms. With free campus events like the monthly Howl and Chills and Glow Up for Mental Health, we encourage students to find community and meet new people.

Mental Health Resources

The best thing you can do for your mental health is to know your resources. Services like the Counseling Center, CARES and the Mental Health Ambassadors offer a robust toolkit to support your well-being.

Counseling Center

The Counseling Center offers a step-by-step guide of their intake process, referrals and other support options available to students. They also provide a list of campus groups to reach out to for community-based support, and a free referral database to assist students in finding an off-campus provider.

The Counseling Center also offers a comprehensive list of self-help resources to access on your own time, including Togetherall, a 24/7 anonymous peer support community available for free to NC State students. Check out some of the informational reads on topics like stress, anxiety or grief and loss that any member of the Wolfpack community can access.

CARES

The NC State CARES referral program, available through Prevention Services, is designed to support students in distress and connect them with campus resources to provide early intervention. If you’re not sure whether you should be referring someone to CARES, check out this guide which outlines when it may be time to reach out. This is an anonymous reporting system that can be completed by faculty, staff or students.

Mental Health Ambassadors

The NC State Mental Health Ambassadors are a group of undergraduate and graduate students passionate about mental health awareness who aim to break down barriers and stigmas for all students to access campus support or treatment. Join the MHA group on Nov. 6 for their event, Glow Up for Mental Health, featuring speeches, a neon dance party and an information session to learn more about the mental health resources on campus.

Howl and Chill

Howl and Chill’s are monthly community events where students can participate in fun and free activities that focus on social self-care. Join us on Oct. 3 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for the next Howl and Chill event, Glowga, where participants will illuminate the night with colorful glow sticks during a yoga session on Stafford Commons. Register now to save your spot – the first 100 participants to arrive will receive a free yoga mat.

Glowing for Mental Health

The campus is glowing with resources to help you shine and thrive at NC State. Whether you’re a student, faculty or staff member, we encourage you to seek early support as you need it, and shine a light on the resources available to others who may be unfamiliar. Early intervention and discussing mental health with a supportive community can improve our state of mind and help us form connections here on campus.
