Wellness Wednesday: The Art of De-Stress
What does it mean for us to de-stress? When one finds a means to de-stress, this can be defined as intentionally relieving physical and mental tension in order to achieve a calm state of being.
This process involves recognizing stressors and finding ways to release their impact, whether through physical activity, relaxation techniques or creative outlets. De-stressing can involve practices like deep breathing, meditation, or even simple breaks during the day to refocus and recharge.
These activities allow individuals to clear their minds, reduce anxiety and improve emotional resilience, ultimately fostering better overall well-being.
End of Semester Struggles
As we are nearing the home stretch toward the end of the fall semester, we may find it more challenging to use time-management skills to de-stress healthily. Students in particular are faced with the heavy demands of final exams, project and internship deadlines and the cumulative stress from academic and extracurricular responsibilities.
During this time, we may unintentionally sacrifice rest and relaxation for late-night study or work sessions over self-care routines. Per the National Library of Medicine, studies show that this time crunch, combined with high academic expectations, can lead to burnout, anxiety and even physical health issues, making it harder to stay productive and focused.
Furthermore, social and personal pressures, such as maintaining friendships and planning for future career opportunities add to the stress, often making it feel impossible to take breaks for meaningful relaxation. Without proper time to recharge, we may end up compromising both performance and well-being, underscoring the importance of finding effective and efficient de-stressing practices amid the chaos of finals.

De-Stress Activities
There are so many ways to practice the art of de-stressing, but we’ve highlighted four major categories below that you can explore during De-Stress Fest.
Physical Activity
Physical activity plays an active role in helping the body manage and reduce stress. Attend a De-Stress Fest event that promotes physical activity like a group fitness class or a waived F45 group training session free to Wellness and Recreation members during finals week.
*F45 and other waived sessions will open registration starting Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Meditation
Meditation is a practice where an individual trains their attention to focus on an object and achieve a state of calmness. Furthermore, many studies demonstrate that meditation is linked to decreased anxiety and helps individuals de-stress during challenging events. A perfect opportunity to practice meditation is The Nature Experience on Dec. 10. Embrace nature and engage in a mind/body-centered practice with the unique theme of exploring trees!
Nutrition
Getting adequate nutrition and rewarding yourself with a treat during finals is a must. Studies show that getting the proper nutrition provides extra energy levels that are needed during stressful events. Cocoa and Crafts with the College of Engineering or Snack Fairies with Prevention Services on Main Campus and Hunt Library, will be handing out snacks to help students refuel their energy!
Art
Art is shown to be another beneficial outlet to help individuals de-stress during distressing times. Another event that gives NC State student’s to space to de-stress is the last Howl and Chill of the semester: Whine and Design. On Wednesday, December 4, come join us in the Coastal Ballroom of Talley Student Union for a guided painting demonstration led by an NC State student artist. Crafting and Connecting on December 5 is another healing space for students to make art in a therapeutic environment and connect with peers. These artistic events help students recharge and take a break from studying during finals week!
This finals season, find opportunities to engage in the art of de-stressing and don’t forget to look out for faculty/staff opportunities as well. Updates to the De-Stress Fest webpage populate regularly, so make sure to find events that fit your needs!
