Wellness Wednesday: Kicking Homesickness with Connection and Fun
Whether you’re far from family, adjusting to new surroundings or simply feeling the weight of your responsibilities, homesickness can affect anyone. This feeling is particularly common as the colder November weather sets in, bringing shorter days and increasing stress.
Why is Homesickness So Prevalent at This Point in the Semester?
Homesickness typically peaks during significant life transitions, such as moving to college or adjusting to a new work environment. According to the American Journal of Psychiatry, individuals who feel disconnected or overwhelmed are more prone to homesickness, which can hinder both academic and work performance. As the darker, colder months arrive, those feelings may intensify, making it essential to seek emotional support and stay connected to others.
Coping with Homesickness
A great first step in coping with homesickness is to recognize that you’re not alone — up to 75% of people have experienced homesickness at least once in their lives. It may also be comforting to know that these feelings may fade over time, usually within one to six weeks.
Similar warning signs of stress that you may experience when homesick include lack of energy, apathy or lack of motivation. Notice these signs through mindfulness exercises like 4-7-8 breathing or meditation, and take action. This could look like surrounding yourself with reminders of home or fostering social connection through play.
Social Connection Through Play
One of the best ways to address homesickness is by building new connections. Social interaction fosters well-being, reduces stress and creates a sense of belonging. Even weak-tie interactions with those you may be less familiar with can spark creativity and boost productivity.
Engaging in activities that encourage social play has been shown to reduce stress, improve brain function and strengthen relationships. Red and White Week, NC State’s homecoming celebration, offers many opportunities for students and staff alike to partake in the fun. Enjoy the Wellness Fest at the start of the week or enjoy an employee celebration to kickstart your weekend. The Boba Party: A Fun Way to Connect
While homesickness may be difficult, events like the Howl and Chill: Boba Party can help students recharge and connect with others. This event provides a casual and friendly environment where students can learn how bubble tea is made as they make their own drinks and engage in play with video- and tabletop games like Jenga, Chess and Connect 4. These student events are a great way to relax, build friendships and shake off the feelings of isolation.
