The holiday season is undoubtedly a time of joy, love and laughter, but it can come with stress and challenges. Amid the festive cheer, navigating complex family dynamics and staying connected with friends from school can feel overwhelming. It is just as essential to prioritize your well-being and peace of mind during breaks from work and school. Here are a few tips to help minimize stress and maintain your sense of inner calm:

Take a breather

When you find you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a step back and give yourself space. Consider participating in group fitness classes or exploring meditation practices. These activities help you regain your composure and manage stress effectively.

Plan activities that bring you joy

Make time for yourself during the holiday season by engaging in activities you enjoy, whether it’s reading a book, going for a hike or taking a relaxing bath. Work with a wellness coach to help you plan events and activities that align with your interests and well-being.

Recognize your catalyst, and make a plan

Your catalyst is something that speeds up or intensifies the development of stress. It is important to identify when these situations occur during the holidays and notice your warning signs of stress. This might look like increased irritability, difficulty sleeping or a sense of overwhelming pressure. Once you’re aware of these triggers, create a plan to cope with them more effectively, like setting boundaries, practicing mindfulness or seeking support from a counselor.

Feelings of loneliness, lack of support or missing your family may also be catalysts, but it’s important to acknowledge and address these feelings. International and out-of-state students often face a unique set of challenges during the holiday season, as they may be far away from their families and homes. Homesickness and longing for familiar traditions can be particularly intense. To cope, consider connecting with other international students, engaging in cultural exchange events, seeking out local celebrations, or hosting your own gatherings with fellow students who can relate to your experiences.

The Office of International Services offers resources and support for students during the holiday season, including events and counseling services tailored to their needs. Remember your campus community can become your support during the holidays, and can provide opportunities to create new cherished memories, even when you’re far from home.

By practicing self-care, seeking guidance when needed and being mindful of your emotional triggers, you can make the most of this special time of year. Whether reuniting with family or navigating the season away from home, remember to find joy and manage your stress to make your holidays a place of warmth, love and peace.
