With exam season quickly approaching, you may be overwhelmed and burnt out from studying. Refresh your mind, body and spirit to come back to your studies stronger and with more intention. De-Stress Fest provides activities for students, faculty and staff to take time for themselves and to relax.

Research from Cornell Health shows that “taking purposeful breaks from studying to refresh your brain and body increases your energy, productivity, and ability to focus.” This looks different for everyone, but when we give breaks a purpose, they contribute meaningfully to our day by boosting productivity, increasing creativity and minimizing decision fatigue.

In addition to the many benefits breaks give us throughout the day, studies show that ‘micro-breaks’ specifically benefit our well-being by preserving the effort required to complete our tasks and reducing fatigue. A ‘micro-break’ can be anywhere from a few seconds to 10 minutes, so if a short break is all you have to spare, consider one of the upcoming grab-n-go events:

Mindful Moments

  • Tuesday, December 5
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Take space to decompress every hour, on the hour with our virtual guided meditations and power snacks, spending as little as 10 minutes practicing grounding and mindfulness.

Harvard Business Review encourages physical activity to boost break times, and these events are designed to provide you with unstructured time for mindful movement:

Recess Rewind

  • Monday, December 11
  • 4 – 7 p.m.

Let out your inner child to play and find the fun in movement with lawn games and activities in Carmichael Gym.

Let’s Walk About It

  • Tuesday, December 12
  • 4 – 5 p.m.

Connect and recharge with nature during a guided meditative walk around Lake Raleigh. Engage all five senses and release your stress through mindful movement. Advance registration is required.

Managers and team members play a major role in the well-being of an organization, so it is important to create a positive culture that encourages employees to utilize breaks. Leading by example and sharing these opportunities with your peers may also influence them to take advantage of them. Take the time to play, relax and recharge those inner batteries in the coming weeks.
