Wellness Wednesday: Adventuring into Adulthood
Transitioning into adulthood can be both exciting and overwhelming. For most college students, it is their first time living on their own and navigating through life independently. From meeting new friends, attending classes, completing homework and figuring out daily tasks such as cooking or laundry, it can feel like too much to juggle.
On the other hand, this part of life opens us up to opportunities for growth and exploration. In this blog, we will look at some of the ways you can find support and new adventures during this transition like building community, exploring Raleigh and embracing your independence.

Growing Through the “In Between”
Stepping into adult life can often feel like entering a new world — one that comes with a lot of exciting new freedoms but also new responsibilities. Suddenly, you are making choices that will impact your future, learning how to balance work and play, personal time, jobs and keeping yourself organized. These tasks can often cause people to feel overwhelmed, as it is normal to feel caught in the “in between” or state of emerging adulthood. The most important thing to remember is that life is a process and you don’t have to have everything figured out!
Finding Your Community on Campus
One of the best ways to help make the transition into adulthood easier is to find your community, especially on campus. Being a part of a group – whether it is a student-led group, campus event, intramural sport or other opportunities on campus – and having a sense of community can help create a support system for you to have when you’re struggling.

Another way to meet new people is to attend Wellness and Recreation’s Howl and Chills, fun and free gatherings designed to cultivate community. Building connections not only supports your well-being but also gives you the confidence to thrive in new experiences.
Networking Made Simple
Networking isn’t just important to prepare you for your future career or advance your current one – it is also a great way for you to grow personally during your time at NC State.
Events such as career fairs, Red and White Week and Winter Welcome Week give students the chance to meet new people, share ideas and learn from others. Research shows that strong networks can lead to greater career opportunities, higher confidence and a stronger sense of belonging. Networking doesn’t have to feel scary; instead, think of it as a way to build new relationships. By approaching it with curiosity and authenticity, you’re able to make connections for the future while creating meaningful relationships that can support you throughout college and beyond.

Your City, Your Adventure
A big part of gaining independence during college comes from exploring the city around you. Raleigh has plenty of chances for you to step outside of your comfort zone and find new things that interest you, such as visiting local coffee shops, going to a park, exploring a museum or attending a city-wide event. Exploring the city of Raleigh not only builds confidence but also encourages you to take ownership of your new experiences. By trying something new, you’ll find that independence isn’t just about managing responsibilities — it’s also about creating your own adventures and enjoying the freedom that comes with this stage of life.
Managing Change in Adulthood
It is normal for adulthood to feel confusing and sometimes hard to navigate. Between trying to balance classes, social commitments, and planning for the future, it’s easy to experience burnout, decision fatigue or the pressure to constantly succeed. The good news is that there are ways to manage these challenges. Start by prioritizing what matters most to you by setting healthy boundaries with your time and energy. Create room for self-care or doing things you enjoy like going for a walk, taking a nap, coloring or baking a new recipe. Last, celebrate the small wins in life. Recognizing progress, even in little steps, can boost motivation and remind you that growth is a process, not a race.
We hope you start to view any transformation you’re going through right now as an opportunity rather than an impossible task. With room for growth, learning and exploration, change can offer something exciting too!
