It’s that time of year when flu season is approaching, and, with COVID-19 already being a major problem, this time it is more important than ever to get the flu vaccine. December and February are peak months for flu cases, with high cases also occurring in October and April.

According to NC State Student Health Services, it is important to get the flu vaccine because it reduces the risk of infection and the risk of hospitalization due to infection. Student Health Services offers students, faculty and staff flu vaccines which are distributed through appointments as well as walk-in flu clinics. A  total of 6,548 flu shots were administered during the 2019-2020 academic year. This year, flu shots were made available at Student Health Services starting Sept. 13.

The same preventative measures taken to prevent contracting COVID-19 should also be taken for the flu, such as washing one’s hands, wearing face coverings, using hand sanitizer, and staying home and away from others if sick. Another preventative measure is not touching your face, since that is one of the easiest ways to get the flu. You can find more tips about preventing the flu on the Centers for Disease Control website.

Appointments to get the flu vaccine are available through the HealthyPack Portal. Before booking your flu vaccine appointment, you first need to upload a copy of your insurance card (If you have not done so beforehand, you will need to present your insurance information on site). You do not need an appointment for walk-in flu clinics. Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, Student Blue, Tricare and United Healthcare are the only insurances supported by the Student Health services. If you have any other type of insurance, $25 will be charged to your student account.

If you experience any COVID-19 symptoms or have tested positive for COVID-19 prior to your appointment, please reschedule for another date.
