University Honors Students Make Connections Abroad
This summer, with the support of a generous donor, the University Honors Program (UHP) was able to provide funding for 40 students to participate in several of NC State’s 60-plus enriching summer study abroad programs, a total investment of about $149,000. These students had the opportunity to develop in many of the UHP’s core values, particularly by engaging with diverse cultures as a community of academically-motivated students with unique curiosities and potential.
Developing a reliable support system is a cornerstone of every student’s college journey. The UHP encourages students to engage with their peers on a deeper level, particularly while studying abroad.
Of her experience with the University’s France: Language, History, and Culture in Lyon program, Biology major and French minor Tristin Troy, shared, “I loved talking to people and learning about where they are from, I met new friends within the program, and of course the food was amazing as well. I really enjoyed my time in France and am very thankful that I got this opportunity. It is not something that happens every day, and being able to further my studies just by being in the country was so much fun and an opportunity that I will never forget.”
Similarly, when describing her experience with the University’s France: International Marketing in Reims program, senior Business Administration major, Sara Danowitz said, “Traveling to Paris, trying new foods and exploring the culture was a once in a lifetime experience. I became extremely close with the people in my group and they showed me the true meaning of friendship. I will forever cherish this opportunity, and it will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Participating in funded summer study abroad experiences undoubtedly strengthened connections between UHP students and the larger Wolfpack community, however, it should also be mentioned that some students found community internationally.
As part of her time in the UHP Oxford program, junior Philosophy of Law and Political Science major, Julianne Biggs, said “Studying Modern British History in the same college that the first female British Prime Minister studied in was extremely impactful. Somerville College is a college founded for and by women. As a woman it felt empowering to live in the same dorms and walk in the same courtyards as people like Margaret Thatcher and Indira Gandhi.”
Summer study abroad programs also allow students to become closer to global communities. Finding community in underrepresented groups both locally and abroad provides the opportunity for students to feel inspired, heard, and uplifted. Biggs undoubtedly felt this way, and was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to study abroad. Upon reflecting on her experiences, she said, “I have fallen in love with England and the English people. I plan to return in the future, but the experiences that I had and the memories that I made will last me a lifetime.”
There is no doubt that students who participate in study abroad view their experiences as life-changing and affirming. Sara Danowitz reflected on this idea with gratitude, as well as how study abroad has strengthened her relationship with the UHP, saying, “I am extremely grateful for UHP funding and I am super excited to be a program graduate this year!”
Current Honors and Scholars students with a FAFSA on file and demonstrable financial need are encouraged to apply for UHP Experiential Grant funding on a rolling basis. Applications are currently being reviewed for spring and summer study abroad funding requests.
