As part of a campus-wide effort, NC State Student Media has decreased the number of website and digital document errors to comply with the Department of Justice’s new interpretation of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

In fall 2025, the websites for Student Media and its affiliated student-run media outlets averaged 1.99 errors per webpage. With more than 24,000 individual web pages, that’s more than 46,500 accessibility errors ranging from poor color contrast to empty headers to missing alt text on images. By the end of spring 2026, 91% of errors had been corrected, with plans in place to remediate the remaining 4,000 errors.

To achieve compliance, the department created digital asset inventories of 1,400 documents and 2,000 multimedia files. The department’s six professional staff completed two required accessibility trainings, as did 72 students. WKNC created the new position of accessibility czar, designed to achieve and maintain digital accessibility compliance. Four other groups incorporated accessibility responsibilities into current positions.

Accessibility remediation efforts were led by associate director Jamie Lynn Gilbert, who has worked on improving digital accessibility since 2015. In 2021, Gilbert was named an NC State Accessibility Champion. She has conducted training on Digital Accessibility for Student Media at multiple workshops and national conferences.
