For the fifth time, NC State has earned a top 10 spot in Military Friendly’s national “Military Friendly Schools” rankings for 2021-2022.

NC State was ranked ninth on the list, based on the following factors: academic policies and compliance, admissions and orientation, culture and commitment, financial aid and assistance, graduation and career, and military student support and retention. Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. Over 1,200 schools participated in the 2021-2022 survey with around 750 schools earning the designation. NC State was one of 162 selected for the “Gold” award status for leading practices, outcomes and effective programs.

Nick Drake, director of NC State Military and Veteran Services (MVS), credits the honor to a university-wide effort.

“It shows our commitment to military-affiliated students and the strengths and values they bring to our campus,” Drake said. “Being designated as a Military Friendly School also helps from a recruitment and outreach standpoint, and lets military families and veterans know that we are ready and able to help them make the transition to college.”

Although this is the fifth time NC State has been recognized as a top 10 Military Friendly School, MVS and the university are continually working on areas of improvement to assist military-affiliated students — and help the university climb even higher in the rankings. Current initiatives include expanding MVS’s College Ambassador Program to both undergraduate and graduate students and recruiting more military-affiliated faculty and staff mentors for students. NC State has also waived the admissions application fee for undergraduate veteran applicants.

“The Military and Veteran Service (MVS) Center has been a haven ever since I was accepted to NC State. I was able to make sure that I had all of the proper information submitted along with having a safe quiet place to study and interact with other veterans at State.”

– Trista Acebo, student veteran at NC State
