Mia de los Reyes Wins Churchill Scholarship with Help from Fellowship Advising Office
Mithi “Mia” de los Reyes has been awarded the Churchill Scholarship, making her the first Churchill recipient in NC State’s history. Students in their senior years who demonstrate a record of academic excellence and advanced research and study, honors, and awards are eligible for the Churchill Scholarship, a one-year award that leads to a Master of Philosophy in science, mathematics, physics, or engineering.
Mia’s academic record is impressive; she is double-majoring in Physics and Mathematics, is a Park Scholar, Goldwater Scholar, two-time Astronaut Scholar, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She has completed research internships at both NC State and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and additionally has spent two summers conducting research at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland. Mia has also presented research at the American Astronomical Society Meeting, the Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering Meeting, and at NC State’s Undergraduate Research Symposium. She also authored a 2015 publication in The Astronomical Journal.
Mia intends to pursue an MPhil in Astronomy and has been accepted to both Churchill College and the Institute of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge. Under the supervision of Professor Robert Kennicutt (Head of the School of Physical Sciences), Mia’s work will focus on updating the well-known Kennicutt-Schmidt law, which describes how the gas density in galaxies affects how quickly stars form.
In addition to the many individuals who have provided her with mentorship and written letters on her behalf, Mia has been greatly supported in her efforts by the Fellowship Advising Office. The Fellowship Advising Office works with students as they apply for national fellowship opportunities. Students work closely with advisors who guide them through the process, providing assistance with selecting fellowship opportunities, critiquing essays and response statements, providing institutional endorsements, and staging mock interviews for applicants who have been selected for regional interviews.
