Awardees should exemplify the tenets of good character, demonstrate a strong academic standing, and express an understanding of the field and an intention to apply the skills and knowledge from the HES minor in their professional life.
Kennedy has been active in community service throughout her time at NC State. She is a member of several service-based organizations including Gamma Beta Phi. She has also been able to incorporate her interest for service with her academic work through opportunities such as the Alternative Service Break to Charleston, SC which focuses on the social issues of underprivileged youth and recreation education. Kennedy is also active with the Nutrition NUTS club on campus and has participated in service activities to encourage good nutrition habits in the local community. Kennedy’s passion for service is evident as she explains “volunteer and service events have helped shaped and encouraged me to pursue a healthcare career in which I can inspire and help people every day.”
After graduation Kennedy plans to attend medical school to pursue a career in pediatric medicine. Through her course and service work, she has come to understand the importance of nutrition and exercise planning, both of which she notes are key components of preventative care. “I hope to encourage my patients to respect the intricacies of the body and seek to live healthy lifestyles,” explained Kennedy. She also has an interest in becoming a certified fitness instructor to teach group fitness classes and help participants achieve their goals of developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
