For NC State Day of Giving on March 22, supporters of NC State’s Feed the Pack Food Pantry have the opportunity to help the organization move forward as it is incorporated into the new Pack Essentials Hub. Located in North Hall, the Pack Essentials Hub will open later this semester and will house Feed the Pack and other Pack Essentials programs that support students’ basic needs.

In honor of Feed the Pack’s 10th anniversary and Feed the Pack’s move to the Pack Essentials Hub, longtime pantry supporters Steve ’79 and Gladys Deaton have established a special challenge for Day of Giving. When the Feed the Pack Food Pantry Fund receives 250 gifts, the Deatons will give $25,000 to support the Pack Essentials program.

“Gladys and I have always been interested in helping others with food and housing insecurity issues,” Steve said. “At NC State, the food pantry and other initiatives like it are easy to support because we are helping a group of students who are already working very hard to improve themselves by going to class, studying and often working a job while pursuing their degree. These students have already demonstrated an extremely high level of grit and determination, so it makes perfect sense to invest in them by providing something as basic as food.”

In addition to this latest initiative, Steve and Gladys issued a challenge gift to support housing scholarships through the Pack Essentials program for Day of Giving in 2022. After receiving 100 gifts towards PACK Housing Scholarships, the Deatons generously donated an additional $25,000 to the fund. This fund provides housing scholarships for students living on or off campus who are experiencing unexpected housing insecurity.

“No student at NC State should be worried about going hungry,” Steve said. “We are not doing this because we feel sorry for them. We’re doing this because we believe in their incredible potential and we expect our investment to pay great dividends in the future. Please join me in making sure we are supporting every member of the Wolfpack community. Thank you.”

Feed the Pack is a student-operated food pantry on NC State’s campus that serves the entire university community by collecting and distributing donations of food and hygiene products. Monetary gifts help with food purchases with a focus on fresh fruits and vegetables, technology support and external outreach.
