Goldwater Scholars Announced
The Division of Academic and Student Affairs is pleased to join the University Honors Program in applauding the recent achievements of two University Honors Program participants. William Crumpler and Catherine McVey have been named Goldwater Scholars for 2015. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is a competitive scholarship awarded to promising students who intend to pursue research careers in the engineering, mathematics, and natural sciences fields.
William Crumpler, a junior in the Materials Science and Engineering program, plans to pursue a Phd in Materials Science and Engineering or Chemistry. Ultimately, he hopes to teach and conduct research on the synthesis and applications of nanomaterials at the university level. William was also a recipient of the highly competitive 2014 DAAD Rise summer internship grant to pursue research opportunities in Germany.
NC State’s second Goldwater Scholar is Catherine McVey, a junior in Animal Science and Statistics. In addition to her participation in the University Honors Program, Catherine is also a Shelton-Caldwell dual scholar. Her goals for the future include pursuing a PhD in Applied Animal Behavior, to eventually develop and scientifically validate new computational and statistical approaches to better study food animal welfare. In 2014, Catherine also received a $5000 Fellowship Advising Office Enhancement Grant. This grant, funded through a private donation to the University Honors Program, provided funding for her to conduct advanced research in swine behavior in Edinburgh, Scotland.
We are also commend the notable achievements of Matthew Boudreau, a junior who received an Goldwater Scholars Honorable Mention. Matthew is majoring in Chemistry and is also in the University Honors Program. He hopes to pursue a PhD, which will enable him to teach and conduct research on the interface of organic chemistry and chemical biology at the university level.
Special recognition goes to Dr. Tiffany Kershner and the campus Goldwater Scholarship Committee: Drs. Lisa Bullard, Jim Knopp, Kenan Gundogdu, Sandy Paur, and Larry Blanton. In total, 47 NC State students have been named Goldwater Scholars. Many congratulations to William, Catherine, and Matthew!
