The university is working closely with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to keep our campus community informed about roadwork and other construction projects on and around campus in the coming academic year.

NC State is working closely with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to keep our campus community informed. Below are some of the construction and roadwork projects that could impact campus commutes for students, faculty and staff in the coming academic year. Get the latest details at https://transportation.ncsu.edu/i-440-ncsu-updates/.

Gorman Street Connector Project

Work is already underway on a project that will connect the Greenway leaving Meredith College and picking up on NC State’s campus. This will last through November 2021. A north and sound bound lane will be accessible on Gorman Street at Sullivan Drive. You can expect delays entering or exiting campus on Sullivan Drive to or from Gorman Street.

I-440 Widening Project

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s I-440 Widening project is well underway and continues to impact traffic in and around the campus. You may have noticed recent ramp closures and detours along I-440 near campus. The four-year construction project — which will add lanes, replace bridges and upgrade interchanges — is intended to improve I-440 (Raleigh Beltline) traffic flow.

Ramp closures and nighttime lane closures along I-440 between Wade Avenue (Raleigh) and Walnut Street (Cary) are underway now. Nighttime lane closures start as early as 10 p.m.

Later this fall you will notice an impact at the Blue Ridge Road and Hillsborough Street intersection. The widening of I-440 will coincide with lowering the grade of Blue Ridge Road and constructing new bridges for Hillsborough Street (NC 54), Norfolk Southern Railway/North Carolina Railroad/CSX Transportation, and Beryl Road to reduce congestion and train-related conflicts with vehicles and pedestrians. A new connector road will link Blue Ridge Road and Hillsborough Street.

The Ligon Street tunnel is scheduled to close mid-late August with a replacement bridge to be constructed over Ligon Street. Completion is not expected until fall 2022. This is a main thoroughfare to get to the NC State and Division of Academic and Student Affairs warehouse. You will still have access via Western Blvd., Hillsborough Street and Blue Ridge Road.
