Coaching the Way to a Healthy and Well Student Lifestyle

By: Remi Oswald ‘19, communications

For many students, college can bring some pretty difficult challenges. Organizing your time to allow for study, school, sleep, work, or challenges with managing school related stresses. At Wellness and Recreation, our goal is to provide all students with the support and facilities they need to manage life challenges and ultimately improve quality of life.

Wondering how Wellness and Recreation can help you with such challenges? It’s time to introduce you to wellness coaching. Who better to tell you than one of our very own wellness coaches, Mary Palm ‘19.

Palm, an American Council of Exercise (ACE) Certified Health and Wellness Coach, is just one of our many trained and certified coaches.

“Wellness coaching provides a time and space for students to focus on their own self-improvement, whatever that may look like for them. Coaches are here to aid clients in making positive changes, providing resources and keeping them accountable,” said Palm.

This free service is flexible and can be easily adjusted to work with your college schedule. They feedback and tips you receive also work well alongside other on-campus resources, like nutritional counseling and personal training. Coaches can help keep you accountable to following the recommendations provided by a dietician, personal trainer, physician or counselor.

“I would describe the relationship as an accountability buddy. We are able to provide you with the resources you need to succeed, find what motivates you to do better, and therefore make a positive change that lasts even once you are finished with our program,” said Palm.

Through the relationships created with wellness coaching, we have found both the coaches and the students to be extremely grateful for the program.

“It’s just nice to have someone else keep you accountable for your goals and to check in on you to make sure that you are happy with your achievements,” said a student currently using the service.
