University Housing Furniture Renewal Efforts Make a Positive Impact Across the State
Each year, University Housing undertakes a major upgrade process to improve student living spaces, while prioritizing sustainability and resource-sharing.
This year, as part of this program, University Housing collaborated with the Surplus and Warehouse team to repurpose furniture from North Residence Hall. In total, 243 bedroom sets were phased out, amounting to over 1,100 pieces, including beds, dressers, wardrobes, desks, and chairs.
The surplus furniture was sold at deeply discounted rates, allowing other institutions to benefit from the quality items at a fraction of their usual cost. This repurposing effort is not only financially advantageous but also strengthens community bonds.
The accessibility of high-quality furniture has enabled these organizations to redirect resources toward other campus improvements, benefiting their student communities.
Beyond the practical benefits, this initiative highlights the university’s commitment to environmental stewardship. By repurposing furniture and diverting it from landfills, the Surplus and Warehouse team, along with University Housing, has increased its waste reduction rate from 80% to 90% over the last three years.
These efforts align with the university’s broader sustainability goals, reducing waste, lowering the carbon footprint, and setting an example for other departments and institutions across the state. Through programs like this, the Surplus and Warehouse team demonstrates that strategic partnerships and sustainable practices can have a lasting, positive impact.
