Tutorial Center Tutors Present at Peer Leader Conference
10 peer tutors from the NC State University Tutorial Center (UTC) presented at the University of South Carolina.
The event, part of the inaugural South Carolina Peer Leader Conference on March 30th, 2019, hosted peer leaders who serve as Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders, academic tutors, and peer mentors from institutions across North and South Carolina. NC State was well represented by undergraduate students Matthew Bucklin, Felix Harris, Isabelle Keim, Brittany Lee, Lara Queck, Grace Taylor, Jared Taylor, Rylee Young, graduate students Ben Credle and Erin O’Quinn, and UTC Coordinators Sarah Stokely and Dr. Robin Smith.
The students’ presentations shared best practices from the UTC’s training programs including using peers as supervisors, helping new tutors set achievable goals, analyzing tests to develop richer study strategies, designing productive opening and closing activities to make the most of SI Sessions, and implementing effective methods for overcoming challenges in a collaborative learning environment.
Students and professional staff from other institutions were eager to implement ideas learned from the UTC’s presentations in their own tutoring programs. It was an exciting opportunity for many undergraduate students to come together to share ideas about helping fellow students be academically successful.
