Leah Arnett, Director of Student Health Services, has announced that Thomas Howard, MD, has joined NC State Student Health Services as the Associate Director for Medical Services effective March 16, 2015.
Dr. Howard joins NC State from Fairfax Family Practice in Virginia where he was named a Washingtonian “Top Doc” in 2014. Howard earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine and completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine from the USUHS and the Nirschl Orthopedic Sports Clinic located in Arlington, Virginia.
In his new role at NC State, Dr. Howard will serve as the spokesperson and lead medical authority on campus for public health related concerns. In addition to clinical duties involving patient care, he will serve as the administrative medical officer for providers in the clinical arena.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Howard join NC State Student Health Services,” said Arnett. “He is an experienced practitioner with strong administrative and leadership skills. We are excited to have him join our team and I am confident Dr. Howard will make a positive impact across campus engaging students and developing collaborative partnerships.”
Dr. Howard has held several leadership positions throughout his career, including Program Director at VCU-Fairfax Family Practice Sports Medicine; faculty member at VCU-Fairfax; Chief, Family Practice and Director, Family Health Center of Fort Belvoir; and Assistant Director, Primary Sports Medicine Fellowship at DeWitt Army Community.
“I look forward to working with the providers and staff in student health to continue to provide excellent and timely medical care to the student body at NC State,” says Howard.
Dr. Howard has special interest in concussion management, serving as team physician for high school and university teams and working with all patients to meet their individual needs in a balanced and thoughtful manner.
