Lt. Cmdr. Eric Allen Cranford ’92 lost his life while serving in the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001. Twenty years later, his spirit of generosity and determination lives on through a scholarship created in his memory.

Elena Williamson is the first recipient of the Rebecca Leonard Scholarship Endowment in Exploratory Studies. The new scholarship is named after Rebecca Leonard, an associate professor emerita and a founder of the Exploratory Studies Program.

Honoring Our Piano Pioneers

When an anonymous donor made a generous gift to endow a new piano performance scholarship in the Department of Music, they left it up to the department to name the fund. Former department head Bob Petters, who has taught in the music department since 1976, recommended that the scholarship be named for two women who each played a pivotal role in developing the piano program at NC State — Phyllis Vogel and Marilyn Lynch.
