Student Media Wins Second Excellence in Assessment Award
NC State Student Media was one of 11 departments to earn the Division of Academic and Student Affairs’ Excellence in Assessment award. Now in its second year, the award is given to DASA units that demonstrate best practices in their annual assessment reports. To be considered, a unit must receive an “exemplary” score in at least 85% of dimensions on a common rubric.
Student Media measured two outcomes in the 2020-2021 academic year. The first outcome was Student Media’s student business and marketing staff will demonstrate the Student Media advertising sales process. The assessment centered on the students’ understanding of a seven-step general sales funnel that goes from initial client contact to closing a sale and post-closing communication.
The second outcome was Student Media will recruit first-year and transfer students. This assessment measured Student Media’s nearly 200 contacts with students during New Student Orientation and Wolfpack Welcome Week. While fall recruitment naturally yields larger results than spring recruitment as new students come to campus looking for involvement opportunities, the percentage of students who indicated interest and subsequently joined the staff was a consistent 13% for each semester.
Other DASA departments to earn the Excellence in Assessment award were Academic Advising Programs and Services, Counseling Center, DASA Finance, Disability Resource Office; Office of Undergraduate Courses, Curricula, and Academic Standards; Prevention Services, University Housing: Facilities, University Housing: Residence Life, University Housing: Residential Learning and Wellness and Recreation. Student Media was one of five departments to be recognized in both 2021 and 2022.
Student Media’s assessment efforts are led by Associate Director Jamie Lynn Gilbert, with data collection for this report done by Gilbert and Business and Marketing Adviser and Manager Zanna Swann.
