Student Media Earns Inaugural Excellence in Assessment Award

By Jamie Lynn Gilbert

NC State Student Media was one of nine departments announced as inaugural recipients of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs’ Excellence in Assessment award. Presented on Oct. 20, the award is given to units in the division that demonstrate best practices in their annual assessment reports. To be considered, a unit must receive an “exemplary” score in at least 85 percent of dimensions on a common rubric.

Student Media measured two outcomes in the 2020-2021 academic year. The first outcome was Student Media’s student staff will demonstrate effective announcing techniques. This assessment centered on how a random sample of WKNC DJs demonstrated five announcing techniques according to a five-point scale. Using the established criteria, 24 of 30 DJs demonstrated effective announcing techniques.

The second outcome was Student Media will utilize effective marketing techniques to increase audience engagement. This assessment measured Technician’s fall 2020 launch of an emailed newsletter in terms of subscription and unsubscribe rates, open and clicks and corresponding traffic to TechnicianOnline.com.

Other DASA departments to earn the Excellence in Assessment award were Academic Advising Programs and Services, Academic Success Center, Advising Technology, Career Development Center, Disability Resource Office, Office of Undergraduate Courses and Curricula and Academic Standards, TRiO – Collegiate Programs and University Housing – Facilities.

Student Media’s assessment efforts are led by Associate Director Jamie Lynn Gilbert, with data collection for this report done by Gilbert and Editorial Adviser Ellen Meder.
