Student Art Sale Heads Outdoors to Gregg Museum

Next month, NC State students will have an opportunity to showcase and sell their art to the local community through the annual Student Art Sale.
This year’s in-person event, scheduled for Saturday, April 19 from 1-4 p.m., introduces an exciting change of venue, taking place outdoors under a large tent on the lawn of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design.
Calling All Student Artists
The Student Art Sale is a unique platform that welcomes submissions from all NC State students, regardless of their major. Whether they study engineering, chemistry, media, art, design, technology or any other field, this event offers an opportunity to showcase and sell art to the Wolfpack community. Since its inception in 2015, the sale has contributed over $70,000 directly to student artists, making a significant impact on their artistic journeys.
Students interested in participating must apply by Friday, April 4. Each artist can submit up to three pieces of artwork, which will be displayed on the Student Art Sale online gallery.
For the third year in a row, the event will feature a hybrid sale model – from 1-4 p.m., students, faculty, staff and members of the public will have an opportunity to purchase artwork in person. Then starting at 5 p.m. on April 19, Arts NC State will open a virtual sale where shoppers can browse a digital gallery of student art and buy directly from students online.
Additionally, all applicants are automatically entered into consideration for the Visual Artist Awards, further recognizing and supporting outstanding talent. Three award winners will be selected, one from each category: 2D, 3D and computer rendered or photography. Each winner receives $500 and their piece will hang in a prominent display case in Talley Student Union near Stewart Theater for the following academic year.

An Invitation to Art Enthusiasts
For members of the NC State and surrounding local community, this is an exciting opportunity to shop for original art to liven up a space or give as a unique gift. The Student Art Sale is not only a showcase but also a celebration of the creativity within the NC State community. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase original artworks, including paintings, woodworking, pottery, sewing, glass, jewelry, photography, and more. Importantly, 100% of sales from every purchase go directly to the student artists, fueling their artistic endeavors.
A History of the Student Art Sale and Iits Connection to the Student Art Collection
A noteworthy aspect of the Student Art Sale is its contribution to the Student Art Collection. Since 2001, a committee of staff, students and local artists have selected original artwork from NC State students for Arts NC State to purchase, with the collection to date holding more than 200 pieces of original student art. This art is displayed in Talley Student Union or select locations on campus.
With only select pieces purchased by Arts NC State, staff realized the need to open up the sale to the public. The public sale started in 2015, with $3,000 of student art sold that year. In 2019, more than $13,000 worth of art was sold, and although the 2020 sale was virtual only due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it still made more than $10,000 for student artists. The Student Art Sale has raised more than $70,000 for student artists since its inception, making a real impact on their lives and careers.
