Every year, the Department of Health and Exercise Studies (HES) awards one student the Isaac Frank Ormond, III Memorial Scholarship Fund. The recipient wins $1,000 for one academic year and must be enrolled in one of the five HES minors. The scholarship application closes on March 12, 2021.

Crista Bain, a senior at NC State minoring in coaching education, was last year’s recipient. Crista applied for the scholarship at the recommendation of HES Senior Lecturer Darrin DeReu, when she was a student in his Introduction to Athletic Training class last spring.

“I was excited that there was a scholarship dedicated to HES minors and thought it would be a great opportunity,” she said.

The scholarship is intended to help students enrolled in HES minors pursue extracurricular activities that enrich their minor courses.

“As an out of state student, this scholarship helped offset attendance costs and allowed me to pursue experiences and my passion for coaching,” Crista said.

Crista coached the Athens Drive Magnet High School swim team as part of her practicum course in the coaching education minor, and led her swimmers to both district and state competitions.

She encourages any student enrolled in a HES minor to apply for the scholarship.

“Believe in yourself and your experience. You chose your minor because it is something you’re passionate about, so let that show through your essays.”

Make sure to submit your application before Friday, March 12.
