Throughout her career at NC State, Peggy Domingue, an associate teaching professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Studies and Department of Performing Arts and Technology, has strived to create a welcoming, engaging environment for her students. 

In May, Domingue was recognized for those efforts at the 2026 National Dance Society Annual Conference at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. The society presented Domingue with its annual Master Dance Educator of the Year Award.

“This is an honor,” Domingue said. “It’s an organization that is dedicated to advancing excellence in dance education, and it represents a professional community that I value and respect.”

The Master Dance Educator of the Year Award recognizes an exceptional dance educator whose work has made significant and lasting contributions to the field of dance education. The College/University Master Dance Educator of the Year Award honors excellence among dance professionals serving at the college and university level. 

Nominees may demonstrate distinction in areas such as curriculum design, teaching methodology, choreography, cultural understanding, student engagement, performance, mentorship and professional leadership.

“This recognition not only reflects my own efforts, but also the encouragement, support and inspiration that I have received throughout my career from colleagues, current and former students, mentors and also family members” Domingue said. “While this may not be considered a lifetime achievement award, I view it as a meaningful acknowledgement of decades of intentional and passionate work that’s been dedicated to fostering welcoming, engaging and effective teaching practices in dance education.” 

Domingue currently teaches two dance classes in the Department of Performing Arts and Technology, Social Dance and Social Dance II. A respected leader in the field of dance, she is known for her dedication to students, commitment to the art form, and meaningful contributions to the broader dance community. 

This recognition celebrates her passion, integrity, and enduring impact on the profession. 

“It means a great deal to both departments I teach in,” Domingue said. “It affirms that we are creating a truly welcoming environment – one where students feel free to express themselves, explore their individuality, and know they are seen not just as learners, but as whole people.”
