NC State Ushers in 97th Session of Student Government

March 29, 2017, marked the induction of five student body officers for the 97th Session of Student Government as we bid farewell to the 96th session’s student body officers.

Among the new student body officers are:

  • Student Body President Jackie Gonzalez
  • Student Body Vice President Mia Connell
  • Study Senate President Mitchell Moravec
  • Student Body Treasurer John Taylor Willis
  • Student Body Chief Justice Jess Hansen

After taking their oaths, each officer gave remarks in regards to how they envisioned change for the student body, why they campaigned, who supported them through this process, and their goals for the next year. Student Body Chief Justice Jess Hansen noted that she was looking forward to working with students and the conduct board in making sure that the student’s best interests are in mind while also ensuring that students are upholding community standards.

Student Body President Jackie Gonzalez spoke about what it meant to be the first Latinx student body president. Gonzalez said “I didn’t run for myself. I ran for the other women of color and people of color who feel like they’re not being heard.” Jackie Gonzalez and Mia Connell are the first pair to be two women in both of these roles, and two women of color.

There is a whole year ahead for this group of five student leaders, but it is off to a promising start. They have a reliable team to provide assistance in the transition period and building off of the work of outgoing officers Paul Nolan, Brayndon Stafford, Jamie Plummer, Daniel Harper, and Mimi McCarthy.

Congratulations to the newly inducted officers and special thanks to the outgoing officers!
