In early June, housing and residence life professionals from around the southeastern United States will gather at NC State for the Southeastern Association of Housing Officers’ (SEAHO) Regional Entry Level Institute (RELI).

This institute is for new professionals in housing and residence life with less than three years of experience, and is a chance for them to learn from eight seasoned faculty members and housing experts. Each expert is assigned a cluster of four participants, who go through a series of presentations, panel discussions, roundtables and small group discussion with their cluster.

Kartina Pawvluk, NC State University Housing’s director of administration and occupancy management, called it an “intensive” institute, designed to help the new professionals prepare themselves for the next step in housing/residence life, or determine if this is the career path for them.

“It’s super exciting,” Pawvluk said. “Hosting RELI is a big deal for University Housing, because we know how competitive it is. Eight members of University Housing have either served as faculty or participants for RELI in the past. So we have lots of people who are invested in this program in different ways.”

Melanie Mitchell, Housing’s director of Impact Leadership Village, will be one of the eight faculty members leading the institute, while Residence Life Coordinator Nadia Sharpe will be one of the participants.

Pawvluk pointed out that the application process to attend the institute is very competitive, with over 100 applicants for 32 spots, and that NC State did not get any special treatment or consideration for admitting participants as the host institution.

Pawvluk has served as both a faculty member and conference coordinator in the past, and will be the point of contact to make sure all participants have what they need with NC State hosting RELI.

After winning the bid, NC State will host the institute for the next three summers. Participants will be housed in the Lakeview Building at Wolf Ridge Apartments on Centennial Campus, with all sessions in Hunt Library, giving NC State and University Housing a chance to show off some of its top facilities.
