The Department of Health and Exercise Studies (HES) is thrilled to announce that Kylie McDaniel and Johnny Paliotti have been named this year’s recipients of the Isaac Frank Ormond, III Memorial Scholarship Fund. The academic scholarship is awarded each year to students enrolled in an HES minor who demonstrate a strong academic standing and consistent commitment to the health and exercise field.

We spoke with Kylie and Johnny to discuss how the Isaac Frank Ormond, III Memorial Scholarship will assist them in pursuing educational opportunities in their respective fields.

McDaniel, a sophomore majoring in elementary education with a minor in dance, said she initially learned about the scholarship opportunity through Pack ASSIST, an interactive search tool that allows students to search and apply for scholarships at NC State. “When I first heard about the opportunity, I decided to apply because it seemed like a perfect match considering I want to pursue a career in dance after I graduate,” said McDaniel.

McDaniel elaborated on her post-graduation plans, explaining that her ultimate goal is to become a dance teacher for a studio. “Being a dance teacher would allow me to combine my two greatest passions in life, dancing and teaching, which I am so excited about!”

Throughout her time in the dance minor program, McDaniel stated that she enjoyed all of her classes, but HESM 328 Dance Composition – Group Forms was one course that really stood out to her in particular. “I took HESM 328 this past semester and it was so fun,” said McDaniel. “Everyone in the class bonded so much and I created so many new friendships from it! I also got to choreograph a group piece and I absolutely loved watching my vision come to life.”

McDaniel expressed that she is thankful for all she has learned from her time in the dance minor program, and that it allowed her to experience different styles of dance she’d never previously tried. “It has been so much fun to learn about new styles and where they originated. I have also gained so many friendships from being in this minor! Dance is truly something that connects us all, and it is so easy to become friends with anyone in this minor.”

McDaniel concluded by saying that the Isaac Frank Ormond, III Scholarship will help her with the financial costs of college as she finishes her degree at NC State. She also plans on using it as an example for her future students as a way of showing them that hard work pays off in the long run.

The second recipient of the Isaac Frank Ormond, III Scholarship is Johnny Paliotti, a junior enrolled in the sports science minor program at NC State. He learned about the Isaac Frank Ormond Scholarship through sports science minor coordinator and senior lecturer Darrin Dereu. “Once I learned about this opportunity, I decided to apply because this scholarship will greatly assist me in affording graduate school so that I can pursue an increased application of nutrition science and earn eligibility to become a registered dietician.”

After graduation, Paliotti plans on utilizing his nutrition science major and sports science minor to provide nutritional counseling to athletes. “My ultimate goal is to improve the overall health and wellbeing of athletes, and I know that the right diet plan can help maintain, or even improve, on years of hard work in training for a specific sport.”

He explained that the sports science minor program has taught him how to better approach training methods, specifically for muscular endurance and muscular strength. “After completing HESM 480 – Principles of Exercise Programming, I just feel like I had a much better understanding of how to approach training regimens using the correct intensity, repetitions and sets of specific exercises,” said Paliotti.

While Paliotti’s intent is to use his knowledge to help improve the health and wellbeing of others, he also elaborated on how the minor has positively impacted his own health. “As a result of analyzing what I consume on a daily basis, my performance in running club cross country and track has improved greatly.”

Congratulations to Kylie McDaniel and Johnny Paliotti!
