Goodbye, Internet Explorer

It’s the browser you love, or the browser you love to hate. Regardless of your emotional ties to Miscrosoft’s Internet Explorer, it’s going away. Learn more about how to make the switch, and exporting your Favorites.

Microsoft announced earlier this year that its long-standing browser, packaged with Microsoft Windows, will be discontinued in favor of a completely revamped browser that has not yet been branded. Internet Explorer (IE) launched in 1995 and the browser of choice for many years. Hampered by security vulnerabilities and other bugs and quirks, IE lost tremendous market share over the last five years. See this interesting history of Internet Explorer, complete with screen shots that will be a blast to the past for many.

Here at NC State, faculty, staff and students using IE often encounter more issues and problems than those using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. A significant amount of time is being spent by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and DASA Tech staff in testing and troubleshooting problems unique to Internet Explorer.

OIT has officially discontinued support for Internet Explorer, and will no longer conduct testing of IE patches, fixes, and enhancements for MyPack Portal, Financial, HR, and Student Information Systems. Likewise, DASA Tech has discontinued support for Internet Explorer. While it remains as an available application on Windows computers, all DASA employees should make the move to either Chrome or Firefox.
