Exciting Wins at The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values
[lead]Each February, student leaders from all four governing councils recognized by the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life get together to take a long bus ride to Indianapolis, Indiana. Their destination? The Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV) Central Conference, which is the largest gathering of FSL leaders in the country.[/lead]
In 2019, the conference welcomed over 3,800 attendees, 28 of those being members of the NC State community. The students who attended are representatives and leaders of their respective governing council: the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and the Panhellenic Association (PA).
The AFLV Central Conference serves as an opportunity for NC State student leaders to connect with peers from across the country, attend educational sessions related to their officer or leadership positions, and gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the value of fraternal membership. Additionally, AFLV Central is also a time for councils to be recognized for their good work throughout the year and celebrate outstanding accomplishments. This year, we are proud to announce two of our councils, the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Association, were nationally recognized for their hard work!
The Council Compass awards program recognizes governing councils for outstanding work in four directional areas (accountability, collaboration, education, and innovation), and awards three levels of achievement (one star through three star) based on the level of accomplishment within each direction. With each star awarded, the “council must show a deeper level of performance and understanding,” and councils may be awarded different star levels between the four categories. The awards are based on applications cultivated and submitted by student leaders in the fall of 2018, and over 400 student councils from universities across the country submitted applications to be considered for this year’s awards process.

- Innovation – 3 stars
Panhellenic Association (PA)
- Accountability – 1 star
- Collaboration – 2 stars
- Education – 2 stars
- Innovation – 2 stars
The Interfraternity Council received the highest level of recognition for Innovation – a reflection of their work to assess issue areas within the IFC community and the development of a strategic plan to tackle tough issues. The Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council decided not to apply for the Council Compass Awards this year and are making strides to align their operations with national benchmarks in these four areas. NPHC, in particular, is refocusing the mission and purpose of their council, and we are excited to see their hard work in action in the upcoming months.
The Fraternity and Sorority Life team is incredibly proud of our student leaders for all that they continue to accomplish, and looks forward to the impact our councils and students will continue to make at NC State!
