The Department of Health and Exercise Studies (HES) is excited to announce that Crista Bain and Zane Mondschein have been named the latest recipients of the Isaac Frank Ormond, III Memorial Scholarship Fund. The academic scholarship is awarded each year to students enrolled in a HES minor who demonstrate a strong academic standing and consistent commitment to the health and exercise field.
We sat down with both recipients to discuss how the scholarship will help them pursue educational experiences and post graduate opportunities related to their HES minors.
Bain is a senior studying sport management in the College of Natural Resources with a minor in coaching education. She first received the scholarship last year after her HESM 381 Athletic Training instructor, Darrin DeReu, encouraged her to apply. With one year left in the minor, she decided to apply again, stating that the scholarship will continue to help her pursue more experiences in coaching.
During her time at NC State, Bain has had many opportunities to work with students at local schools through the coaching education minor. She has volunteered at Dillard Drive Elementary, teaching students how to live healthy and active lifestyles, and coached the Athens Drive Magnet High School swim team.
Bain said that her favorite class in the minor is HESM 370 Foundations of Sport Coaching Instruction, which she said helped her develop the coaching knowledge she was able to put into practice. She stated, “I loved the hands-on aspects of the class and getting to design and implement our own lesson plans.”
Bain says the scholarship will also continue to help cover tuition costs as she finishes her senior year at NC State. After graduation in December, she hopes to go into community relations at the collegiate or professional athletic level.
This year’s second recipient, Zane Mondschein, is a junior studying business administration with a minor in sports science. Born and raised in Raleigh, Mondschein hopes to continue his sports science studies and attend physical therapy school in the future. He explained, “I want to combine rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, and sports performance to serve a diverse population.”
Mondschein heard about the Ormond scholarship through the same instructor, Darrin DeReu, who is the sports science minor program coordinator. Mondschein explained, “I applied because I am passionate about contributing to the field of sports science and thought it was a great opportunity.”
He says the Ormond scholarship will help him work toward his physical therapy career path. “Being able to have financial assistance to assist in the cost of tuition is a big help. It takes some stress off of me and allows me to better focus on making good grades and actively pursuing my goals.”
Congratulations to Crista Bain and Zane Mondschein!
