Celebrating University College Staff and Faculty: Katy Walls
This year, NC State’s University College is celebrating its 10-year anniversary, and a decade of helping students discover their true selves and a lifelong love of learning.
As we celebrate a full Decade of Discovery at University College (UC) we are taking a moment to honor the incredible individuals who serve as the heartbeat of the community. We asked several staff and faculty members from University College’s departments and units to share their stories, and what their time in UC has meant to them. Their dedication, expertise and passion are the common threads that have shaped the last 10 years of interdisciplinary excellence at NC State, and the story of University College simply wouldn’t be complete without their voices.
Over the next month, we’ll be sharing question and answer pieces to help you get to know these outstanding faculty and staff members, continuing with Katy Walls, a program manager for the Crafts Center.
What is your role with University College, and how long have you been here?
I have been with University College for nine years, and I am a program manager for the Crafts Center.
What do you enjoy most about being part of University College?
During my freshman year at NC State, I saw graffiti in the Free Expression Tunnel that said “be who you needed when you were younger” and that sentiment has lived rent free in my mind ever since. Now, as a staff member, I bring this energy into everything that I do on campus.
What is one of your favorite memories from your time with University College so far?
Assisting with the annual Student Art Sale and watching it grow exponentially every year since its inauguration. When it began, the Student Art Sale was small, mostly focused on 2-D works, and only allowed for in person sales/interactions. There are now over 100 students that participate, awards for multiple categories and the opportunity for students to sell their work online. Working with Arts NC State and the Friends of Arts NC State Board to elevate the plane for student artists has been incredibly rewarding.
What is a “hidden gem” or favorite spot on campus that you think every student or staff member should visit?
The channel between Park Shops and Page Hall gets the most beautiful and cascading afternoon light, particularly in the fall when the ginkgo tree hits its yellow bloom.
What advice would you give to a student who is just beginning their journey at University College today?
Curiosity is key – always be curious in your explorations, especially when you encounter failure. Each new question that you develop, or problem that you confront, will guide you to new possibilities and ways of thinking that would otherwise go unacknowledged.
