This year, NC State’s University College is celebrating its 10-year anniversary, and a decade of helping students discover their true selves and a lifelong love of learning.

As we celebrate a full Decade of Discovery at University College (UC) we are taking a moment to honor the incredible individuals who serve as the heartbeat of the community. We asked several staff and faculty members from University College’s departments and units to share their stories, and what their time in UC has meant to them. Their dedication, expertise and passion are the common threads that have shaped the last 10 years of interdisciplinary excellence at NC State, and the story of University College simply wouldn’t be complete without their voices.

Over the next month, we’ll be sharing question and answer pieces to help you get to know these outstanding faculty and staff members, continuing with Kim Kroll, senior academic advisor and lecturer with University Advising and Exploratory Studies.

What is your role with University College, and how long have you been here?

I am a senior academic advisor and lecturer with University Advising and Exploratory Studies, and I’ve been here six years.

Can you share a favorite moment where you felt the impact of your unit’s work on a student’s journey?

I see the impact of our advising and teaching almost every day – whether it be helping a student find a major that would meet their needs and interests, or just explaining how university policies and procedures work. The personal attention we are able to give to students is unique on a large campus like NC State and I enjoy teaching students these skills so they are able to go into their majors as educated independent students who know how to find resources and navigate the systems.

What motivates you to come to campus and support our students every day?

My students motivate me. I enjoy teaching them in our University Studies Courses. I enjoy reading their reflections to different assignments and assessments, and I enjoy seeing them find their new majors and successfully CODA into them.

What is one of your favorite memories from your time with University College so far?

My favorite memories involve various students. I had one student who was quite lost and indecisive – she was very creative and wanted to find a major that fit her needs but that she could be successful in. She had a hard first semester, but stuck with it and worked with me over the next four semesters to get into her dream program of Fashion Textile Management.

What is a “hidden gem” or favorite spot on campus that you think every student or staff member should visit?

I love walking on the Rocky Branch trail. I give myself 20-30 minutes twice a day to get outside, clear my head and get some steps in.
