Bike Safety On Campus

Students are strongly encouraged to register their bicycles with NC State Transportation. Bicycle registration deters crime and is an aid in the identification of lost and stolen bicycles. When you register your bicycle, NC State Transportation will send you a registration sticker in the mail. Your information will be entered into a database, so that if your bike is stolen and recovered by the police, it will be quickly returned to you. As an added deterrent to bicycle theft, Campus Police can engrave your driver’s license number on your bike free of charge.

  • Bikes should be secured to one of the designated exterior bike racks with a high security U-bolt lock or two. U-bolts provide the most protection against theft.
  • Bikes may not be stored in halls, stairwells, breezeways or other common areas, because they can block evacuation routes.
  • Bikes may be stored in a resident’s room provided it is not an obstacle to evacuating in the event of an emergency.
  • Bikes that are blocking evacuation routes will be removed by the Fire Marshall without notice.

At the end of the school year, take your bike with you. Transportation will tag bicycles left behind. If the bike is not claimed within 14 days, it will be considered abandoned and will be removed by Transportation.
